Data and Methods

In this section, we provide an overview of the data and methods employed in our research project on sexualization and gender representation in video games.

Data Source

The primary dataset used in this study comprises a comprehensive collection of video games from the past decade (2012-2022). This dataset offers valuable insights into gender representation, sexualization, and demographic information of characters featured in a diverse range of video game titles. The games selected for inclusion in the dataset are based on well-defined character roles and storylines to ensure a focused analysis of gender portrayals. We accessed the dataset from reputable sources, including video game-focused websites like Metacritic, Destructoid, IGN, and GameSpot, as well as official websites of game developers and publishers. This multi-source approach allowed us to curate a robust dataset representative of various genres and platforms. You can find the original data set here.

Analytical Methods

To conduct a comprehensive analysis of the data, we employed a mixed-methods approach that combines quantitative and qualitative methodologies. The quantitative analysis involved utilizing various statistical tools and data visualization techniques to discern patterns and trends in gender representation and sexualization across the selected video games. Our analytical methods allowed us to compare the prevalence of male and female protagonists, explore the distribution of genders among non-playable characters (NPCs), and assess the extent of sexualization in character portrayals.

The qualitative analysis involved a critical examination of character attributes, roles, and sexualization indicators to gain deeper insights into the nuances of gender representation in video games. We carefully reviewed character descriptions, in-game dialogues, and cutscenes to understand how gender norms and stereotypes are portrayed and reinforced within the game narratives.

Data Visualization

To present our findings effectively, we utilized Tableau Public software to create interactive and visually engaging data visualizations. The visualizations include bar charts, pie charts, and heat maps, allowing us to present complex data in a digestible format. Through these visualizations, we aim to offer a clear and comprehensive view of gender representation and sexualization trends in video games over the past decade. Tableau Public’s user-friendly interface enabled us to customize the visualizations to suit our research objectives and present the data in an accessible manner for both academic and non-academic audiences.

Website Development

To share our research findings with a wider audience, we built a dedicated website using WordPress. The website serves as a platform to present our data visualizations, research insights, and analysis of gender representation in video games. Through this website, we aim to contribute to the ongoing discourse surrounding sexualization, gender equality, and diversity in the gaming industry. The user-friendly design of the website ensures easy navigation and access to our research for interested stakeholders, scholars, gamers, and the general public alike.

In conclusion, the data and methods employed in our research project provide a comprehensive and systematic analysis of sexualization and gender representation in video games. Through a well-curated dataset, a mixed-methods approach, and engaging data visualizations, we seek to contribute to a deeper understanding of the portrayal of gender in one of the most influential forms of contemporary media.
